Woman with Parasol

Sale price$800.00

This luminous figure study by Hampton Watts captures a woman mid-gesture, caught between sun and shade with a white parasol at her side. The composition is beautifully simple: three large shapes—the white circle of the parasol, the long vertical of the citron-green dress, and the enveloping field of foliage—carry the whole painting.  The background is a blur of layered greens, suggested rather than described, so that the figure feels almost suspended in light rather than standing in a literal garden.

Watts paints in a loose, alla prima style that immediately calls to mind late 19th-century Impressionists. The subject—a woman in a hat with a parasol, turning away from us—is an echo of Claude Monet’s “Woman with a Parasol,” but rendered with a more modern, cropped intimacy. The confident, economical brushwork in the arms and dress recalls John Singer Sargent’s society portraits, where form is suggested with a few deft strokes rather than meticulously outlined.

As a piece for the home, it reads as both timeless and contemporary: a classic Impressionist subject handled with fresh, expressive brushwork and a modern, almost monochrome green palette. It would be at home in a light-filled living room, a dressing room, or a hallway where that sweep of green and the elegant, turned-away figure can lend a sense of movement and quiet romance every time you pass.
