She didn't train in clay
Kass O’Brien is a ceramic artist in West Palm Beach, Florida, who has been building botanical vessels by hand for about twenty years. Her MFA from Cranbrook was in photography-based collage — clay came later, and on her own terms. It shows in how she works. She assembles rather than throws: cutting, shaping, trimming, applying. The instinct to compose a picture out of separate pieces never left her. She only changed materials.
Every leaf cut one at a time
“I don’t use molds,” she says, and that’s the whole method. Each ginkgo fan, each sea grape leaf, each of the hundreds of tentacles on an anemone candlestick is cut, shaped, veined and pressed into place by hand. Nothing repeats exactly. It’s why the vessels read as something that happened rather than something manufactured — the eye catches the irregularity before it works out what it’s looking at.
Palm Beach noticed first
Hers were among the first ceramics interior designer Celerie Kemble carried, and Galerie and Veranda have both written her up since. None of that changes how a piece gets made — one leaf, then the next, in her West Palm Beach studio. But it does tell you something that people who look at objects for a living keep coming back to her work.

Kass O’Brien is a West Palm Beach–based ceramic artist whose work captures the textures, movement, and elegance of the natural world.
