Two of Anne's baskets live in the Smithsonian's permanent collection. These are made the same way, by the same hands, from the same pattern she invented at twelve. The difference is you can fill this one with bread and set it out for company.

Built to be used, not admired

Strong, light, and made to be handled — Anne builds these for use, not for a shelf. Larger ones carry a wire through the handle, wrapped back over in honeysuckle, so you can load them up and pass them down the table without a second thought.

Self-taught at twelve. Still weaving.

Anne is entirely self-taught. She worked out her weave at twelve, tending goats in the Virginia hills, and has used that same pattern for every basket since — well over forty years of them. No lessons, no borrowed methods. Just hers.

Craftsman Profile

Anne Scarpa McCauley

Born in Vermont, Anne moved with her family to Virginia at age four. She grew up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of eleven children.

Her family, early hippies, had many animals including dairy goats. Anne often had the job of tending the herd of goats on unfenced parts of the property. Anne sometimes made little circles or wreaths for her hair with the nearby honeysuckle. At age twelve she made her first basket, using a coil made of honeysuckle. This same coil pattern is used in all her baskets.

Anne's baskets are original and unique. She has never taken lessons, studied books or contacted other basket makers for ideas. Anne has been making these for over thirty years and has won many awards, including being included in the Smithsonian's collection of American craft objects at the Renwick Gallery.

Do you offer returns?

We aim for all our customers to be happy with their order, and do what it takes to make things right.

Do understand though that as most of our products are handmade and not mass produced, there will be some variation in finish, color, or size. But if any product arrives damaged, we will happily replace it. Please send back your return within 14 days of receiving it.

Do you ship overseas?

Yes, we ship all over the world. Shipping costs will apply, and will be added at checkout. We run discounts and promotions all year, so stay tuned for exclusive deals.

How long will it take to get my orders?

It depends on where you are. Orders processed here will take 5-7 business days to arrive. Overseas deliveries can take anywhere from 7-16 days. Delivery details will be provided in your confirmation email.
