Hawthorne Copper Bar Strainer

Sale price$325.00

Elevate your cocktail ritual with a strainer that’s as refined as your bourbon

Ben Caldwell's Copper Hawthorne Strainer is made individually by hand of pure copper, including the spring, and fastened with brass rivets.  The shape is based on the elegant and beautiful ginkgo leaf, which is hand-hammered to give it texture.  Its beautiful craftsmanship will provide a touch of luxury to any home bar.

The classic Hawthorne style strainer was first used at the Hawthorne Café in Boston, MA, in 1892 and has been in constant production ever since.  This bar staple is used to filter out the ice, fruit, herbs, and other ingredients of a cocktail as it is being poured into the glass.  It became popular after fresh, clean ice became widely available year-round and continues to be popular right up to the present day.

Craftsman Profile

Ben and Lael

Ben Caldwell is a classically trained artist whose journey into metalwork reflects a deep commitment to craftsmanship and tradition.

In 2001, Caldwell founded Ben & Lael Inc., a Nashville-based studio where he creates bespoke copper, silver, and enamel pieces. His work is characterized by hand-hammered, raised, and chased methods, often incorporating tools of his own design. Drawing inspiration from antique silverware and natural forms, his creations are both functional and artistic. Notably, his pieces have been commissioned as gifts for prominent figures, including a wedding gift for Amy Grant and Vince Gill and the governor of Tennessee.

Caldwell's dedication to preserving traditional metalsmithing has earned him recognition, such as the Tennessee Artists’ Guild’s “Emerging Artist of the Year” award.
