8 in Leaf Basket

Sale price$310.00

Wild Virginia honeysuckle, woven into a modern Southern bowl

This 8" Leaf Basket feels like something gathered from a sunlit Virginia hedgerow and set gently on your kitchen counter. Anne McCauley handweaves wild honeysuckle vine into an airy, open bowl, then finishes the rim with a smooth band and two sculpted leaves that seem to rest there naturally. The palette is a soft, wheat-and-straw mix that plays beautifully with marble, wood, and linen.

At roughly eight inches across, it’s a perfect “everyday centerpiece” scale—wide and shallow enough for clementines on the island, sea shells on a coffee table, or keys and mail on the entry console. Empty, it reads as a small piece of sculpture; filled, it frames whatever you place inside with quiet texture. Because each basket begins as living vine and is woven one at a time, no two are exactly alike—each carries its own subtle variations in color, curve, and leaf.

Craftsman Profile

Anne Scarpa McCauley

Born in Vermont, Anne moved with her family to Virginia at age four. She grew up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of eleven children.

Her family, early hippies, had many animals including dairy goats. Anne often had the job of tending the herd of goats on unfenced parts of the property. Anne sometimes made little circles or wreaths for her hair with the nearby honeysuckle. At age twelve she made her first basket, using a coil made of honeysuckle. This same coil pattern is used in all her baskets.

Anne's baskets are original and unique. She has never taken lessons, studied books or contacted other basket makers for ideas. Anne has been making these for over thirty years and has won many awards, including being included in the Smithsonian's collection of American craft objects at the Renwick Gallery.
