Sculptural Basketry, Rooted in Nature

A sculptural expression of nature — in a perfectly versatile scale.

This 10" Nature Basket by Anne Scarpa McCauley is handwoven from wild honeysuckle vine gathered in Virginia. The gently rising walls create a soft bowl form, while woven leaves and branching vine details move organically around the piece.

Wild honeysuckle, gathered green in Virginia and coiled by hand — ten inches of open leaf-work around a small center bowl. A block of dry foam tucked in the middle turns it into a base for wheat and dried hydrangea, bittersweet, whatever October gives you. Rebuilt each season.

Each basket is shaped slowly by hand, allowing the natural curve of the vine to guide the final form. No two are identical.

A piece that feels gathered from nature — and made to live beautifully at home.

In the Smithsonian. And on your table.

Two of Anne's baskets live in the Smithsonian's permanent collection. These are made the same way, by the same hands, from the same pattern she invented at twelve. The difference is you can fill this one with bread and set it out for company.

Built to be used, not admired

Strong, light, and made to be handled — Anne builds these for use, not for a shelf. Larger ones carry a wire through the handle, wrapped back over in honeysuckle, so you can load them up and pass them down the table without a second thought.

A young girl in a green field kneels beside a woven basket, with sheep and rolling hills in the background.

Self-taught at twelve. Still weaving.

Anne is entirely self-taught. She worked out her weave at twelve, tending goats in the Virginia hills, and has used that same pattern for every basket since — well over forty years of them. No lessons, no borrowed methods. Just hers.
