She started selling in school

Rachel V. Whisler is the potter behind RV Pottery, and she throws and trims every piece herself at the wheel in her Nashville studio. She began selling her work while she was still studying ceramics at Belmont University, and started RV Pottery in 2015 with a plain brief: dinnerware made to be used day after day.

Mixed in the studio

You won't find these glazes anywhere else. Rachel works out each recipe herself and mixes it in the studio. Midnight is a matte black, named for the specks that come through it like stars. Woo's Blue is glossy and shifts a little from one piece to the next. Fib's Pink made its first appearance at Nashville's Little Fib.

From Sean Brock's dining room to yours

Rachel's plates are on the table at Sean Brock's Audrey in Nashville, at Hestia in Austin and at Smyth in Chicago. She works directly with chefs and restaurateurs on dinnerware for their dining rooms, and the list now runs past thirty restaurants, from Bresca in Washington, D.C. to Kingswood in Oxford, Mississippi. A restaurant plate has to earn its keep night after night. The ones you take home are made the same way, in the same studio, and they go straight into the dishwasher.

Rachel V. Whisler

Rachel V. Whisler found clay at Belmont University in Nashville, where she studied ceramics and began selling her work before she graduated. She founded RV Pottery in 2015 and still does the work at the wheel herself, throwing and trimming each piece and mixing every glaze in her own studio. Her brief has never changed: dinnerware sturdy enough for a dinner service and handsome enough to keep out at home.
